Pfizer Settles Hormone Therapy Case; Deal Avoids Liability Phase of Trial

PHILADELPHIA—Three women who developed breast cancer after taking the hormone replacement drug Prempro Dec. 8 reached a confidential settlement with Pfizer Inc., two days after a state jury in Philadelphia awarded the women a total of $72.5 million in compensatory damages in their consolidated lawsuit against the drug’s manufacturer (Elfont v. Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Inc.).

Prempro is made by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Inc., which was acquired by Pfizer in 2009.

“We were very pleased” with the settlement, attorney Leonard Lundy, of Lundy Law, in Philadelphia, an attorney for the plaintiffs, told BNA Dec. 9.
