Patient Data Access Deadline Pushed Back to 2021 Due to Virus

Patients will have to wait longer to access their health records easily through digital means like their smartphones under an extension for providers the HHS announced Thursday.

Health providers and IT developers were supposed to have systems set up by Nov. 2 to give patients easy access to their health history. Now they have until April 5, 2021, because health IT systems are strained due to the pandemic and expanded telehealth use, officials from the Department for Health and Human Services told reporters Thursday.
