Opioid Production Cuts Urged by Justice Department

It’s been a tough week for the opioid industry.

President Donald Trump threatened Aug. 16 to drag opioid makers into court. A grim report the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released Aug. 15 shows overdoses—largely powered by synthetic opioids—reached a record high in 2017. Now, sales of oxycodone, hydrocodone, oxymorphone, hydromorphone, morphine, and fentanyl could be on the chopping block.

The Drug Enforcement Agency Aug. 16 proposed cutting U.S. production of those drugs by an average of 10 percent next year. The attorney general, who heads the Department of Justice, is required by law to establish production quotas for ...
