NIH Starts Own Trial of Drug Trump Touted for Covid-19 (1)

An NIH-funded study to test hydroxychloroquine as a potential therapy for patients hospitalized with Covid-19 began enrolling patients, the agency announced Thursday.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly touted hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, as a “game changer” for combating the coronavirus. But scientists, including White House coronavirus task force member Anthony S. Fauci and several former Food and Drug Administration commissioners, have cautioned against promoting a treatment before it’s been shown to work.

The drug hasn’t yet been proved to be safe and effective as a Covid-19 therapy in a well-controlled clinical trial. ...
