J&J Sues Alcon Over Patents for Laser Eye Surgery

J&J’s Amo Development unit claims Alcon’s LenSx system infringes a dozen patents for the use of lasers in cataract surgery.

• AMO said it “revolutionized cataract surgery” through the use of advanced imaging technology called optical coherence tomography, which allows surgeons to control the laser when accessing the diseased lens so it can be removed and replaced with an artificial one
• It has enabled cataract surgery “to be performed precisely, consistently and safely,” according to the complaint filed Tuesday in federal court in Wilmington, Del.
