GlaxoSmithKline Announces Settlement Of ‘Majority’ of Suits Over Avandia

Drug manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline Jan. 13 settled a number of state and federal product liability actions over the diabetes medication Avandia (rosiglitazone maleate), the company told Bloomberg BNA Jan. 18.

Between this round of agreements and earlier settlements, the company now has settled “the majority” of state and federal court Avandia suits, Bernadette L. King, GSK director of external communications, said.

In November, Judge Cynthia M. Rufe of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, who presides over Avandia federal multidistrict litigation, directed the parties to mediation to resolve the cases. The new round of settlements—in both state ...
