The Food and Drug Administration said Feb. 4 it approved the first tissue adhesive approved for internal use.
The adhesive, known as TissuGlu, is urethane-based and allows a surgeon “to connect tissue flaps made during surgery to remove excess fat and skin or to restore weakened or separated abdominal muscles (abdominoplasty surgery),” the FDA said in a statement. Attaching tissue flaps with internal adhesive may reduce or eliminate the need for postoperative surgical draining of fluid found between abdominoplasty tissue flaps, the statement also said.
Pittsburgh-based Cohera Medical Inc. manufactures TissuGlu.
