Elsevier Wins $15M Victory Against Pirate Articles Site

Academic publisher Elsevier Inc. has won a permanent injunction and $15 million in damages against a website that made the company’s scientific articles available without permission, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) said June 22 (Elsevier Inc. v. Sci-Hub, S.D.N.Y., 1:15-cv-04282, order 6/21/17).

Elsevier is a member of the AAP.

Elsevier sued Alexandra Elbakyan, a graduate student in Kazahkstan who was the proprietor of Sci-Hub. According to the complaint, Sci-Hub obtained login credentials and used proxies to access Elsevier content, which is usually stored behind paywalls.
