Doctors who rely on next-generation DNA tests could be missing valuable chunks of information that prevent them from accurately diagnosing genetic disorders, according to a study by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
DNA tests that use a process known as whole exome sequencing don’t adequately analyze more than a quarter of genes, researchers at the medical center found in a study published Jan. 6. The study also identified wide gaps in the ability of such tests to detect specific disorders from epilepsy to cancer.
