Blackbaud Escapes Suit Over Ransomware Attack of Patient Data

Blackbaud Inc. won’t have to face negligence and breach of contract claims brought by Trinity Health Corp. over a 2020 ransomware attack that exposed patient and donor data, after a federal judge ruled that the health nonprofit couldn’t prove that the breach caused it to incur expenses.

Charleston, S.C.-based Blackbaud provides software for nonprofits, educational institutions, and health-care organizations, among other groups. A prolonged data breach and ransomware attack exposed the personal data of people whose information was used by Blackbaud’s clients, including Trinity.
