2019 Outlook: Opioid Issues Include China, Addiction Abatement

Don’t expect much more from federal lawmakers in terms of sweeping opioid legislation in 2019. Instead, turn your attention to how states, health-care facilities, and enforcement agencies are handling an influx of federal cash.

The funds from Congress’ latest opioid package address both treatment and law enforcement initiatives. Nearly $8 billion in grants will flow into states for inpatient care, pregnant mothers, and treating hepatitis C infections. Federal enforcement initiatives also got a financial bump and will be primarily focused on illegal drug shipments and cracking down on synthetic drugs.
