Woman Suffers Fatal Fall Into NYC Manhole With Dislodged Cover

A woman died after falling into an open manhole in Midtown Manhattan. Consolidated Edison Inc. said the cover to the manhole had likely been displaced by a passing truck.

Video footage suggests a multi-axle vehicle turned onto East 52nd Street from Fifth Avenue and dislodged the cover, a Con Edison spokesperson said in an emailed statement. Roughly 12 minutes later, the victim parked her car nearby.

The spokesperson said that the company is reviewing the details of the “tragic incident,” and added that while this is a rare occurrence, manhole covers can get displaced by heavy vehicles.
