A potential showdown at the Second Circuit looms as New York City argues it doesn’t have to carry out federal immigration laws.
Critics of sanctuary city policies are pinning their hopes on the federal appeals court, which split with the Seventh, Ninth and other circuits to rule in favor of President Donald Trump during his first term on a key immigration issue. The Manhattan-based circuit said in 2020 it was lawful for the Trump administration to condition grants to cities and states on assistance with federal immigration enforcement.
