NYT scribe felt ‘lousy’ about Palin piece

It was an anxious night reading Twitter.

That’s what former New York Times opinion editor James Bennet described as he took the witness stand Thursday in Sarah Palin’s libel retrial against the paper.

Bennet edited the piece “America’s Lethal Politics,” which initially suggested a link between a Palin PAC’s rhetoric and the shooting of then-Rep. Gabby Giffords.

He became “alarmed” by an email from his colleague, conservative columnist Ross Douthat, expressing concern about the piece and spent the night reading critical tweets, Bennet recounted to his lawyer from the stand. The next morning he told a colleague: “I feel lousy, ...
