NY’s Hochul Seeks Ban on Law Enforcement Wearing Masks

New York Governor Kathy Hochul proposes a ban on law enforcement officers using face coverings while dealing with the public, as part of measures to “protect New Yorkers against ICE.”

  • Ban would apply to state, local and federal officers, would exclude tactical equipment, sunglasses or medical masks, Hochul’s office says in emailed statement
  • Proposes expanding right to sue government officials for violations of constitutional rights to include federal officials
  • Among other measures, proposes prohibiting state and local law enforcement from coordinating with federal immigration enforcement for non-criminal violations like jaywalking or minor vehicle and traffic violations
