The Council on American-Islamic Relations New York filed a federal lawsuit against New York City and individual police officers who the organization says assaulted and forcefully removed the hijabs of two women who participated in a protest in August.
The incidents are examples of “what appears to be a growing police practice of forcibly and publicly removing women’s hijabs at protests as a form of brutal crowd control through intimidation and religiously targeted violence,” says the lawsuit filed Sunday in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
