NYC’s Transit System to Get $600 Million of Stalled FEMA Money

New York City’s transit system is set to receive $600 million of long-awaited Federal Emergency Management Agency funds for additional cleaning expenses incurred during the Covid pandemic.

The reimbursement money is a boost for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the state agency that oversees the city’s subway, bus and commuter rail lines.

Without the FEMA funds, the MTA’s expected budget shortfalls would grow. The agency is projecting a $160 million deficit next year that’s estimated to increase to $306 million in 2029, according to MTA financial documents.
