NYC Garbage Complicates Union Pacific’s Transcontinental Push

New York City’s needs to handle its garbage is the latest challenge for Union Pacific Corp. in its bid to take over Norfolk Southern Corp. to form the nation’s first coast-to-coast freight rail company.

The Surface Transportation Board should reject a revised application filed by the railroads without prejudice because it lacks details on how a combined railroad would affect thousands of carloads of trash shipments annually from the city, according to a document filed May 8 by the Department of Sanitation of New York.
