New York prosecutors and public defenders are pushing for increased aid from the state for lawyers carrying student loan debt as the Trump administration restricts a longstanding loan forgiveness program for public service workers.

Dozens of district attorneys and defender groups — adversaries in court, but now allies in Albany — sent a letter to Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) asking her to include the funds in the 2027 budget plan, due April 1.
