Legal Aid Society May Strike for 1st Time in 32 Years

The state’s largest indigent legal services provider could begin a strike Friday that would affect New York City’s high-volume criminal, housing, and immigration courts.

Unionized lawyers at the Legal Aid Society—over 1,000 workers—voted to stop working as soon as July 18 if a new collective bargaining agreement isn’t reached by then. They’ve scored some powerful voices in their corner—with Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani supporting their efforts and Attorney General Letitia James (D) joining him.
