ICE Must Improve NY Holding Center

A Manhattan federal judge temporarily blocked ICE from holding immigrants for prolonged periods in unsafe and unsanitary conditions in New York City’s immigration courthouse, my colleague Beth Wang reports.

Judge Lewis A. Kaplan’s decision on Wednesday requires ICE to improve detainment conditions at lower Manhattan’s 26 Federal Plaza by providing access to soap and toothbrushes and limiting the number of people held there, among other changes.

The preliminary injunction also requires the federal government to allow detainees to make confidential, free legal calls to attorneys — with interpreters if needed — within 24 hours of being detained and at least ...
