Maurene Comey said in a message to her office colleagues reviewed by Bloomberg that she “was summarily fired via memo from Main Justice that did not give a reason for my termination.”
Comey warned colleagues that a challenge for prosecutors now is to bring cases “without fear of retribution.”
“If a career prosecutor can be fired without reason, fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain,” Comey wrote in the message. “Do not let that happen.”
A spokesperson for SDNY declined to comment on her departure. Representatives of the White House and the Justice Department didn’t respond to requests for comment.
Since Trump returned to office in January, the Justice Department has dismissed prosecutors and administrative staff connected to earlier criminal probes of the president as well as investigations into US Capitol rioters.
The department also has come under criticism from some Trump supporters in recent days over its handling of the so-called Epstein files. Maurene Comey’s father was fired as FBI director by Trump during the president’s first term.
