The Manhattan federal judge presiding over Luigi Mangione’s case warned prosecutors to stop making statements linking him to “left-wing” extremism or there could be consequences.
Judge Margaret Garnett issued the directive after Mangione’s lawyers complained that public remarks by government officials, including President Donald Trump, violated rules meant to ensure defendants get a fair shake.
While the judge hasn’t ruled on Mangione’s larger ask to preclude the death penalty, the order Wednesday signals that the court is taking his arguments about prospective juror bias seriously. Mangione is accused of murdering a UnitedHealth executive outside a Manhattan hotel in December.
