It wasn’t racist to withhold diplomas from three Black students who broke graduation protocol, a White Philadelphia principal said Wednesday in a suit decrying the city’s school district for demoting her.
Lisa Mesi said she was only following the lead of prior Black principals who also enforced a no-celebration rule at Philadelphia High School for Girls, which serves mostly young women of color. But, Mesi told the US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania that Philadelphia disciplined her because of her race, and for refusing to attend a press conference to apologize.
