Washington State Settles Foster Parents’ Pronoun Policy Suit

Washington state officials will pay $250,000 in attorneys’ fees and change state agency policies to end a lawsuit over a requirement that foster parents use a child’s preferred name and pronouns.

The Department of Children, Youth, and Families is barred from denying foster parents a full license consistent with their requests “solely because of their religious beliefs, including speech and actions pertaining to marriage, gender, or sexual relationships,” according to a settlement and permanent injunction signed off Wednesday by Judge David G. Estudillo of the US District Court for the Western District of Washington.
