Walgreens to Pay $3.5 Million to Settle Hazardous Waste Claims

Walgreen Co. will pay $3.5 million to resolve allegations that the drug store giant unlawfully disposed of hazardous waste in violation of California laws and a stipulated judgment from 2012 dealing with similar issues, state prosecutors announced.

Walgreens was alleged to have improperly disposed of hazardous waste in company trashcans that went into municipal landfills not authorized for hazardous waste between 2013 and 2020. The stipulated judgment follows a similar result in 2012, when California authorities filed a complaint that ended in a $16.57 million stipulated judgment.
