Galveston County, Texas, must redraw its commissioners court precinct map, after a federal trial court Friday found it discriminates on the basis of race in violation of the Voting Rights Act.
“The enacted plan illegally dilutes the voting power of Galveston County’s Black and Latino voters by dismantling Precinct 3, the county’s historic and sole majority-minority commissioners precinct,” Judge Jeffrey Vincent Brown of the US District Court for the Southern District of Texas ruled, following a bench trial.
