Court rules meant to help consumers stuck in tilted contracts can’t save a major California auto dealership owner in his suit against Volvo, a New Jersey court ruled Thursday.

Southern California dealer Hooman Nissani can’t get back cash he invested into a Los Angeles development after New Jersey-based Volvo Car USA pulled out of a plan to build a new dealership with him on the property. Even though his letter of intent with Volvo was a contract of adhesion—a take it or leave it deal that courts scrutinize—Nissani can’t get around a provision in the pact blocking him from suing. ...
