Van Gogh ‘Sunflowers’ Sale Was Devil’s Bargain, Lawyer Claims

Van Gogh’s world-renowned “Sunflowers” painting should be returned to its rightful owners after it was sold in a “classic devil’s bargain,” an attorney for the purported heirs of a Jewish collector who liquidated his holdings as Nazis came to power told the Seventh Circuit on Thursday.

Judges John Lee, Doris Pryor and Kenneth Ripple of the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit all repeatedly asked attorneys at oral arguments Thursday to show whether a court in Illinois has proper jurisdiction to decide the matter in the first place.
