A public high school in eastern Pennsylvania with the name “Redskins” for its sports teams won’t have to educate students about negative connotations of the term or eliminate logos, after a state appeals court said Monday that harm to students doesn’t trigger the state’s Human Relations Act.
The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission got it wrong when it imposed those restrictions on the Neshaminy High School’s use of the name, logos, and images based on “harm to non-Native American students,” the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania said. The commission found no evidence of discrimination against Native American students.
