US Supports Renters’ Suit Over RealPage Algorithm for Landlords

The US government joined renters in an antitrust case against software company RealPage Inc. and landlords, saying that algorithms are simply “new machinery” that can be used to fix prices.

“The law prohibiting horizontal price fixing applies with full force to schemes involving pricing algorithms,” the Department of Justice said in a filing Wednesday in the US District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee. The government recommended that the court deny a dismissal request by RealPage and the property companies.
