University of Phoenix Can’t Shake Video History Privacy Lawsuit

University of Phoenix failed to persuade a district court to dismiss much of a proposed class action that alleged it improperly used third-party tracking technologies to disclose video-watching behavior.

Plaintiff Janielle Dawson argued in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois that using trackers from Meta Platforms, Google, Microsoft, TikTok, and Amazon while she viewed prerecorded videos in connection with her online classwork violated the Video Privacy Protection Act, Electronic Communications and Privacy Act, and the Illinois Eavesdropping Act in a bid to improve course offerings and targeted ads.
