United Healthcare Must Reconsider Residential Treatment Coverage

United Healthcare Insurance must reconsider its decision to deny insurance coverage for mental health treatment provided to a minor at a Missouri residential treatment center, a federal district court said Monday.

The plaintiffs—referred to as C.L., and his mother G.W.-S.—showed that deficiencies in United Healthcare’s processing of their claims deprived them of the full and fair review required by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, Judge Robert J. Shelby of the US District Court for the District of Utah said in a Monday order. Shelby granted and denied the parties’ cross-motions for summary judgment in part.
