Uber Bypasses California Employee Carve-Out Law, Suit Says (1)

Uber Technologies Inc. was hit with a lawsuit Monday alleging it is flouting a controversial California gig-worker law by failing to provide drivers with a process to appeal their account deactivations.

The ride-share giant’s violation of Prop. 22 means the company should no longer be allowed to classify its drivers as independent contracts, as the law allows. The complaint asked that Uber instead be forced to treat drivers as employees.

Rideshare Drivers United, which claims to represents 20,000 ride-share drivers in California, filed the suit in California Superior Court, San Francisco. The group said Uber hasn’t provided any bona fide ...
