Uber Drivers Can Proceed Against Microsoft on Privacy Claims

Microsoft Corp. must face a proposed class action alleging it violated the Illinois biometric privacy law in connection with Uber’s use of its facial recognition technology to verify the identity of drivers in the state, a federal court ruled.

Emad Kashkeesh and Michael Komorski claim that they had to photograph their faces through Uber’s “Real Time ID Check” security feature to register as Uber drivers. The pictures were then transferred to Microsoft’s Face Application Programming Interface to verify that the real-time photos matched previously uploaded photos, they alleged.
