Uber Ballot Proposals Meet Receptive Massachusetts Court (1)

Ballot initiatives seeking to cement Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc. drivers’ status as independent contractors, and a separate proposal that would allow them to unionize, met an open-minded Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, which suggested some initiatives may be phrased clearly enough to bring to voters.

The Supreme Judicial Court heard arguments Monday from two groups of registered voters attempting to block from appearing on the 2024 ballot a set of industry-backed initiatives governing drivers’ classification status, and a proposal about their collective bargaining rights.
