A criminal pardon—even from the president—isn’t enough to save a lawyer from a New Jersey law license suspension.

Ocean County Republican Organization Chairman George Gilmore was suspended by the New Jersey Supreme Court Wednesday in a decision finding the underlying facts from the local party boss’s federal tax trial warrant sanction even though he was pardoned by President Donald Trump in 2021.

Gilmore was convicted in 2019 on charges of withholding two quarters of payroll taxes from the federal government and then providing false statements on a mortgage application so he could settle nearly $1 million in debts. However, the ...
