Trump Lawyers Move to End 28-Year Migrant Child Treatment Order

The Trump administration moved to end the 28-year settlement guiding the treatment and release of migrant children in government custody.

The motion filed Thursday in the US District Court for the Central District of California argues the Flores Settlement Agreement is an “intrusive regime” impeding the executive branch’s “core foreign relations functions.”

“Successive Administrations have tried unsuccessfully to free themselves from the strictures of the consent decree and this Court’s gloss on it,” the filing said. “But detention of juvenile aliens continues to be—as it has been for more than a generation—dominated by the strictures of a 1997 agreement.”
