Trump Cabinet, Nonprofit End Suit Aiming to Recover Signal Chat

Members of the Trump administration and a government transparency group agreed to dismiss a lawsuit seeking to preserve messages exchanged by administration officials on Signal.

The case was dismissed with prejudice May 1, a day after the parties’ request to end the case in the US District Court for the District of Columbia. American Oversight sued Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and four other cabinet members in March 2025, claiming the administration’s use of Signal—a messaging app that can be set to have content disappear—violated the Federal Records Act.
