Idaho’s new law criminalizing transgender people from using public bathrooms that align with their gender identity is unconstitutional, a group of trans Idahoans said in a new lawsuit.
The law, which takes effect July 1, “is one of the most punitive and broadest-sweeping laws in the country to restrict restroom use by transgender people,” the group said in a proposed class action complaint filed Wednesday in the US District Court for the District of Idaho. It threatens to imprison people for using sex-designated restrooms in government-owned buildings and places of public accommodation that match their gender.
