A Texas school board and two administrators settled a lawsuit brought by a former teacher who alleged she was fired in retaliation for questioning the school’s Covid-19 mask policy on Facebook.
Karen McCarty in 2020 posted on a public Facebook page that school employees weren’t required to wear masks during the Covid-19 pandemic, despite Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive order mandating indoor masking at the time. McCarty argued things would “get back to ‘normal’ a lot faster” if masking was required. The fifth-grade math teacher made several other posts questioning the school’s masking policies.
