A former university president in Texas can be held liable for defamation for allegedly accusing a student of lying about being sexually assaulted, the Texas Supreme Court said Friday.
Answering questions certified by the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the Texas justices recommended that the New Orleans-based court reinstate the case against Paige Patterson, former president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Patterson may be liable for supplying defamatory material to another publication if he knew the material would be published, the Texas justices said in responding to one of two questions from the federal court.
