Paralegals in Texas won’t be permitted to provide legal services anytime soon, as a plan originally set to take effect in December could be delayed by several more months.
During a state bar meeting Friday, Justice Debra Lehrmann announced the paralegal “project is on hold” after the public raised “a lot of concern” during a comment period.
The high court will now wait to see if the legislature approves its own initiative allowing licensed paralegals to provide some legal needs. A Democratic House member filed a bill in December that resembles the Supreme Court’s plan.
