Four nonprofits secured a win against Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) order cracking down on the transportation of migrants Thursday, as applied to them.
A recent US Supreme Court opinion limiting universal injunctions will inform the breadth of the ruling by the Western District of Texas, after additional briefing.
Although Abbott’s 2021 order “should be permanently enjoined,” Judge Kathleen Cardone granted relief only as it applies to the nonprofits and one individual, who provide services to migrants.
Cardone called for additional briefing on if the injunction should extend to the groups’ volunteers and contractors, and to their beneficiaries.
