A Dallas-area attorney admitted to referencing fictitious cases in a brief, saying she failed to verify results from online searches.
Heidi Hafer’s admission came after a Texas court of appeals said it couldn’t locate four cases she cited in a May 2024 brief and ordered her to explain herself.
“This has been a humbling and embarrassing lesson in the importance of verifying every citation at its source,” Hafer told the court in a response published Tuesday.
