Texas Independent Sues Over Daunting Ballot Signature Standards

A former Democratic nominee for Texas lieutenant governor says state ballot restrictions make it impossible for him to run as an Independent in a new lawsuit that seeks to give him more time to collect signatures for the November election.

Mike Collier, the Democratic nominee in 2018 and 2022, said he couldn’t begin collecting voter signatures until May 27, the day after the primary runoff election in the Democratic lieutenant governor’s race.

That gave him just 30 days to get more than 81,000 signatures before the June 25 deadline.
