Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is expected to avoid a potentially unlawful appointment for the statewide office of Comptroller of Public Accounts as part of an unusual plan to fill the vacancy, a source familiar with the decision told Bloomberg Law.

Sen. Kelly Hancock (R) is the leading choice for a job in the tax collection agency that’ll put him on track to take over when Comptroller Glenn Hegar leaves at the end of the month, according to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
