Texas Clinics Linked to Abortion Probe Remain Closed, Judge Says

HEMPSTEAD, Texas --- The Texas midwife facing the first criminal case in the state for providing an illegal abortion has been released from jail, but her Houston-area clinics will remain closed, a judge ruled Thursday.

Judge Gary Chaney of the 506th District Court granted the state of Texas’ injunction request following an all-day civil hearing in Waller County.

In keeping the clinics closed, Chaney, who issued a temporary restraining order last week, said his decision is about more than just abortion.

“I’m more worried about whether someone’s out there being a doctor and they shouldn’t be a doctor,” he said. ...
