A federal judge denied the American Federation of Teachers’ motions for a preliminary injunction and class certification in a suit alleging the US Department of Education illegally cut off access to income-driven student loan repayment plans and loan consolidation.
The ruling comes after both the union and the Education Department asked Judge Reggie B. Walton to deny the motions in an Oct. 17 joint status report and proposed order. In the documents, the parties also asked Walton to stay the department’s deadline to respond to the union’s amended complaint, pending further guidance from the court—a request he also granted. ...
