Tangipa Pressed on Political Complaints About California’s Maps

Attorneys defending California’s new voter maps pressed a Republican state representative over his public remarks about their creation during the first day of a hearing to determine whether the new districts can be used in the 2026 midterms.

The dispute in the US District Court for the Central District of California is over whether race—rather than strictly political gain—played a significant role in California’s new congressional map favoring Democrats. California Republicans seek a preliminary injunction blocking the Golden State map that would likely flip five House seats for Democrats, erasing GOP gains from Texas’ redistricting.
